Local storms threatened Saturday and Monday but we all stayed dry and the sun came out to provide great weather for this year's state service rifle championship.
Winning the standing match was Konrad Powers with a 195 but he had several others close behind him. Army Reservist SSG Jacob Probst shot a 194, Kim Dobbs had a 193 and both John Lowe and SFC Adam Stauffer turned in 192's.
David Schrank showed everyone how sitting should be fired by shooting the only 200 with 12 X's. Last year's service rifle champion, Tim Klauer, had a 199 along with Lowe, Stauffer, and Cliff Adams.
Despite his poor 197 in sitting, Powers still clung to a one point lead over Lowe, Dobbs, and Stauffer. Klauer and Probst were three points off the pace while Adams was four points back.
Showing the field that his sitting performance was no fluke, Schrank fired another 200. This time with 9 X's in rapid prone. Mike James shot a 199 while Dobbs and Lt. Col. Jon Casillas had 198's.
The leaderboard now had a shakeup with Dobbs taking the overall lead. One point behind were Powers and Stauffer. Klauer and Lowe were back three and Adams was back four.
With such a tight race at the top, it would only take a few points at 600 to change overall position. John Holliger didn't feel like dropping any of those points so he shot a 200-9x. Klauer took his clean deep into his string and only dropped a nine on his final shot. SSG Brian Rautanen and Powers had 197's while Schrank and Jeff Marienthal fired 195's.
Klauer's near perfect performance in slow prone vaulted him into a tie with Powers as both shooters each had 785's. Klauer had two more X's though and successfully defended his state service rifle championship. Dobbs and Holliger were third and fourth respectively. Coincidentally enough, also with the same score and separated by two X's.
